A rare brain infection has left a teenager critically ill. The infection is caused by an amoeba and is typically fatal. Fewer than 10 people in the US contract this infection each year.

The Centers for Disease Control reports that out of 167 cases from 1962 to 2024, only four people have survived. Health officials have chosen not to release further details about the teenager's case to protect their privacy.

More information about this infection and the teenager's condition may be available from health officials, who have expressed sympathy for the family and loved ones of the affected teen.
